Salva Kiir succeeds Garang as Sudan’s Vice President Salva Kiir, who took over as the leader of Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM) following the death of John Garang, was sworn in as Sudan's vice-president on Tuesday August 9 2005 in Khartoum.
Mr. Garang led the SPLM in a bloody war against the Islamic government that claimed over a million lives. 1.5 million people dead He was regarded by many in the south as a symbol of peace and hope until his death three weeks after becoming the vice president as part of a deal to end decades of the conflict. He was buried in Juba a southern town of Sudan. . Mr. Kiir vowed that Garang’s vision and aspirations will carry on. "As sure as day follows night, the torch he has kindled shall not be extinguished. Not under my command" Kiir declared at the burial ceremonies attended by many people including many African leaders .The president of Sudan stated that the peace deal will be honored to the letter and will not be derailed by Garang’s untimely death.
